Old Job, New Job

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks. As I posted earlier, going into the new year we weren’t really sure what was going to be happening with my job. Well, I found out on January 3 (along with 60 other Jobsterites) that my job was ending (or more politically correct…my position was being “dissolved”). That sucked. There was some good news, though: 3 weeks of severance pay and (more importantly) that I was going to get to stay on as a contractor for a short time. So, after getting over the frustration of being laid off, I realized that if I could get a job before my contract time was up the severance would be more of a bonus.

As a result, the last 9 days have been busy with sending out resumes, making contacts, and scouring the job boards (and, really, I even started doing that before January 3 due to all the rumors).

On Wednesday I had lunch with David, the owner of Tyrnstone Systems – an IT consulting company in Seattle. I had spent about 5 months contracting with Tyrnstone back in 2005 before I got hired on at Jobster. David offered me a full time salaried position at Tyrnstone and yesterday (Thursday) I accepted. (whew!) So Tuesday will be my last day at Jobster and Wednesday I’ll start at Tyrnstone.

Tyrnstone caters primarily to the SMB (Small/Medium Business) market and does some pretty cool work. I think in addition to Windows systems administrator stuff, I’ll also get to do some project management. My official title is “Senior SMB Systems Engineer”. I’ll still get to take the bus to work and when I need to visit a client site I’ll get to take the company car. There’s some other cool perks as well (like a Windows Mobile phone – I’m soooo ready to get rid of this Blackberry!).

All in all, it’s looking pretty good. Sonja and I are feeling truly blessed. And you can bet that the severance/bonus is going straight at some debt!
